BMX Race Ljubljana 2024: Kick-off of the Alpe-Adria BMX Series and the Hunt for Final Olympic Points

The now traditional BMX Race Ljubljana will take place on April 20th and 21st, once again as part of the Slovenian BMX Cup and the Alpe-Adria BMX Regional Cup, and on the second day of the competition also with UCI C1 status. The fifth edition of the race in 2023 attracted over 170 riders. Can we expect a new record in the sixth edition?

The BMX race competition in Ljubljana is one of the most anticipated events in the Olympic qualification cycle. With carefully chosen race dates, this year’s event marks the third edition in the current Olympic qualification period, attracting top riders from Italy, Denmark, Germany, and Hungary.

The event consists of two races, with the second (Sunday) race holding international status. Both races will take place at the BMX Park Ljubljana, a well-known venue on Linhartova cesta. Young Slovenian riders have also made their mark in the increasingly strong international competition, using Ljubljana as a springboard for European cups and other international competitions.

Miha Jakopič, head of the cycling school at KD Rajd and race director, expects a strong turnout for this year’s race: “The BMX Race Ljubljana is becoming more and more recognized on the international BMX scene. With the Olympics just around the corner, this year’s sixth edition is sure to attract a large number of elite riders chasing the last tickets to Paris. As usual, the race also counts for the Slovenian BMX race cup, and we are of course also happy to be a regular part of the Alpe-Adria BMX regional cup. Because of this and the constant striving for the best possible organization, many riders come to Ljubljana every year, and of course they are also cheered on by many spectators.”

The Olympic qualification period ends on June 2nd, but the Alpe-Adria BMX Cup will only be getting started then. After Ljubljana, the races will take place in Maribor (11/12 May), Vösendorf (Austria), Sopron (Hungary), Mühlen, Baierdorf (both Austria) and the September final in Gencsapati, Hungary. A total of 7 venues, each with two races. The organizers’ association has confirmed numerous improvements that will take the cup to a higher level, and at least 150 participants are expected at each venue.

The main sponsor of the race is the City Municipality of Ljubljana, and the partners of the race are Zavarovalnica Triglav, Sinter, Unior, Factory Store, Bičikleto, Extreme Vital, Bikehanic, G-Shock, Lumar, Nutrispoint, Liquishot, media partner mtb.si and the Cycling Federation of Slovenia.
